We have all missed watching, playing, and travelling for football. But we walk on with hope in our hearts.
In collaboration with Liverpool FC's community team, Red Neighbours, and as part of our campaign to be With you all the way, Expedia hosted Walking Football on the Anfield pitch the 24th of May. Walking Football is a programme designed to encourage participants of ages ranging from 40 all the way up to 90s to engage in regular physical activity, in this case a mini football tournament, played on the pitch!
Meet our forever young Walking Footballers and how getting together to play ball has transformed them both physically and emotionally.
Sol Sorky (84, left in photograph) has attended the last 3 years of the programme. He could hardly walk and was overweight, but now he is one of the most enthusiastic participants of the group. He plays twice a week now and loves every minute.
Joe Blundell (84, middle in photograph) served in the Navy for many years. With great talent and a real character, he is a much loved player.
Tommy & Robert Doran are two brothers who have lived in Anfield all their lives. Both in their mid-70s, Robert has been a Steward at Anfield, and Tommy remembers playing football with the great Louis Bimpson in Anfield's car park. Tommy lost his wife very recently and Walking Football has been a great help to him, physically and emotionally.
Ken McNee (70) has had a difficult year, having been diagnosed with cancer and leukaemia, but he loves Walking Football. He attends twice a week - a true fighter! Go Ken!
Some of these fellas have never played on the pitch before. Three of them were in their 80s, which is amazing, and just to see them running (and) walking around, enjoying themselves is terrific. It's not just for physical well being, it's for our mental and emotional well being as well.
